Preparing your Curriculum Vitae

Using Recruitment Consultants

  • Choose your consultants carefully: find consultants you like and trust to put your case accurately. Good consultants will know their market thoroughly and will be able to give you detailed briefings about potential positions and employers.
  • Communicate. The consultant’s role is to act as a conduit between prospective employers and you. In order to be effective, your consultant needs to understand your requirements clearly and have precise feedback from interviews. Remember you need to work together to maximise your chances.
  • Keep your consultant informed as to changes in your circumstances e.g. increased salary, change of address, etc.
  • Be frank. It is better to tell your consultant at the start if you have left a previous position under a cloud. They are used to dealing with these matters and can present your case in the best light.
  • Be clear. Give your consultants full details of your remuneration package. Don’t forget non-cash benefits, e.g. pensions. Your consultant can conduct effective negotiations as they have up-to-date information on salary levels and can guide an employer to make an appropriate offer.
  • Don’t forget that potential employers will ask consultants for their views on your personality, commitment, aspirations, etc. You should therefore try to leave a positive impression with your consultant.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for advice at any stage of the process right up to handing your notice in and negotiating the period of notice you will have to serve.
